This Friday Five is coming at you at the end of a really weird week – July 4th on a Wednesday – I mean, what is that. Needless to say, whether your BBQ was over the weekend before or on Wednesday, it was probably a hot one! I hope you had a pool or a lake to cool off in. Alright – let’s get started on Friday Five.
McDonald’s $1 Burgers
Look. I know McDonald’s has a bad rap in North America. And I mean, sure, sometimes the restaurants aren’t the nicest and the food isn’t super healthy or fresh – whatever. We don’t eat there every day by any means, but if we are on a road trip… and it’s Sunday and Chick-fil-a is closed, we might end up there.
My point is, there is a time and place where McDonald’s can be quite nice. And even more so with their most recent summer deal. If you download the McDonald’s app (not a bad idea anyway, because they often have pretty good deals) you can find a coupon that gets you any sandwich (minus Signatures and double Quarters) for $1. That’s a pretty good deal, and the best part is you can get the coupon once a day through September 30th! And that’s any sandwich, so it doesn’t have to be red meat – for $1 each, McDonald’s will definitely be my road trip restaurant of choice.
If you live near an IKEA, head there this weekend to score a nice $25 off $150 with this coupon. Not sure how you’ll spend $150? Just convince a friend to go with you and split the savings! IKEA coupons are pretty rare, so this is a great chance to grab that new patio table you’ve been eyeing!
Flying Blue 50% off
Flying Blue is the awards program of Air France and KLM – and they occasionally run promo rewards that are prettyyy sweet. Case in point, their current promo scores a solid 50% off reward flights from 3 North American cities – Washington D.C., Houston and Montreal. Now, one of those is a little far north, but the other two are reasonable distances for either a road trip or a Southwest flight. In order to get 50% off (and the best dates / cities will probably go quickly), you have to book by June 30th and fly from the 31st of August to the 30th of October. It’s not a huge window, but it could work for a quick weeklong getaway.
For under 50,000 points, you can get 2 roundtrip flights to a bunch of different cities in Europe – at least everywhere I checked – Paris, London, and Eindhoven. Sarah and I were considering jumping on this deal for a week or two, but the downside is that these reward flights include “fuel surcharges”. Which is basically a dumb way for an airline to recoup some of its cost. The round trip fuel surcharges will run you about $200 per person – not bad, but also not free.
KLM and Air France are pretty random airlines – so how do you get 50,000 points to make this trip? The easiest way, and how I did it, was to transfer points from a rewards program partner. I had a card that had an annual fee coming up, so in order to “save” my points and still be able to cancel the card, I transferred my 52,000 points over to Flying Blue. I was originally saving these for a trip to Hawaii, but I’ll definitely be keeping my eyes open the next time they have promo flights to Europe!
Amazon Prime Day
The Black Friday event of the summer is coming up on July 16th – is anyone excited? I honestly have never gotten a Prime Day deal. They tend to be pretty random, in my experience, but if you have a bigger Amazon purchase coming up, it might be worth holding off on it for a week. Then, double check it over Prime Day and see if it’s dropped in price. Here is a handy guide with some useful info that will be updated to include the best Prime Day deals.
GUYS. The guest bathroom is DONE. And man, it feels (and looks) so good. I’ll be doing a full financial recap of our project on Tuesday (just like the financial review of our Australia / NZ trip), so be sure and tune in for all of that, plus a bunch of pictures!
The Simple Summary
That is all I’ve got for this week everyone – I hope you are able to snag at least one of these deals (hello McDonald’s). Be sure and check back on Tuesday for our Bathroom financial review – it should be a fun one!
